Nobody’s Sidekick (a Bategan & Sarobin fanfic)
It’s been forever since the comic has been updated, I know, but I thought with the recent events in Mash’s life (meeting T&S, giving them the Bategan and Sarobin shirts, etc) and my strong feelings about Sarobin not being a sidekick, I would contribute to the community by writing a fic.
[[Disclaimer for comic fans: I know there is intense debate about whether or not Red Robin is up to par with Nightwing with most comic fans on the side of Dick Grayson as Nightwing being the best thing ever. I don’t like Nightwing though, and this is my fic, so deal with it. Also, Nightsara/Sarawing both sounded stupid.]]
Bategan sat at the back corner booth in the otherwise empty diner wrapped in her cape and sipping halfheartedly from a cup of really bad coffee in an attempt to stave off the coldness welling up within her. According to the clock tacked lopsidedly above the aging countertop across the room it was nearing 3AM. In a few hours the night would be over and she would sneak back home and pretend she had spent the night vigilantly fighting the forces of evil instead of hiding fully costumed in the back of a 24-hour diner on the outskirts of the city trying simultaneously to avoid seeing and avoid thinking about her identical twin sister.

The Fanfic Comic is Back On
Hey everyone! Sorry I haven’t been keeping you all up to date. Let me explain why the comic is late:
1) Mash and I both recovered from our illnesses (nobody died!) but then I had to move from Georgia to Pennsylvania - kind of a hectic trip.
2) Mash felt that her art wasn’t up to her standards of perfection and wanted to spend some more time messing with it.
3) Two weeks after moving to Pennsylvania I had to then move (back) into college.
Classes have started for me now, but the fanfic comic is STILL ON and we are still planning on pursuing original work, as far as I know, after that. We haven’t forgotten about you and please feel free to inbox me any time. As of right now I don’t have any word on when the first issue will be finished, but work is happening.
To prove it, here’s a snippet of my rough outline for the second issue:
In the darkness, Lindsey lies still. Her breathing is deep and slow, but she is not asleep. She has barely slept at all in the last week and a half. Beneath her calm exterior her heart is racing. She can hear the blood pounding in her ears. The digital clock on her night stand glows bright red in the darkness, the illuminated numbers that read 3:47 AM bore into her brain.
She throws an arm over her face and sighs, willing sleep to come despite the torment in her mind.
It doesn’t.
Why The Comic is Late
Mollie and I are both really sick. She’s missing work because of it (I think its a nasty sinus infection?) and I have officially lost enough weight that I’m getting concerned for my health because I can’t eat without getting extremely ill. She’s been fighting hers for about 2 weeks, me for a week and a half. Sorry for the delay again, but things are going to be slow until she’s feeling better and until I figure out why my stomach is trying to devour its neighboring organs.
So…
So obviously on Mollie’s end you’ve got lots of little tidbits of whats going on art wise. I thought I’d hop on here and ask if there’s any other sorts of behind the scenes stuff you might want to see. As we’ve said, when issue one is done there will be a download of all the original sketches/schematics and the actual written chapters (which are written in typical chapter format - not outlines but fully written chapters) for those of you who are into that, but is there anything else you would like to see from us? Obviously we want to keep you interested, so if there’s more we can do to keep you interested let us know. What can we do, if anything, that we aren’t already doing?
Hey :) I was wondering if you were going to make a page with all the comic posts so I could put a link on my blog? Cheers :)
I’ll talk to Mollie - I don’t see why we couldn’t do that. If she gives me the thumbs up I’ll do it tonight or tomorrow and post the link here.
Page 5 Ready to Go
Page 5 is probably my favorite so far, because I really had fun trying to write the descriptions for it, and its the first of the pages to really exhibit a chunk of the script (other than page one). Mollie did an amazing job of bringing it to life (as she always does) and the pace is starting to pick up as far as story goes. The nightmare was actually the first part of the comic I visualized when we started discussing the project, and I built the rest of the plot around it, so as the nightmare plays out you’ll be able to (hopefully) piece together what is going on.
We’re doing our very best to bring these updates in a timely fashion, but Mollie is sick and I am sick (seems to be the theme right now) and so we, again, ask for your patience. I’m always around to answer questions and take comments (I have slightly more free time than Mollie because I work from home, so to speak) so feel free to hit me up for info/to provide feedback.
I think we’re both really, really proud of the quality of the work we’ve put forth so far. I hope you’re as pleased as us.

Quick Clarification
Chapter 1 will be up within the week. The way we’re doing it, from what I understand, is that the entire chapter will be downloadable on the Mashstash page (and probably on mine) in a zip file that includes original sketches, diagrams, the first two songs we’ve chosen to accompany this comic, and the original “screenplay” so to speak. Each chapter will be done this way. The first chapter in its entirety will be somewhere around ten pages long. As soon as it is done and we have received some feedback from you we’ll move on to putting Chapter 2 into final form and drafting Chapter 3.
I hope that’s clear. I think that’s clear.

Back to Work
Well, we’re back to work on the comic. Mollie will be putting in a few hours tonight and I will (hopefully) be joining her for some of that so I can keep you all posted on our progress. Rumor has it Mollie will be including all of my original script in the zip file download, so that should be interesting.
So, what do you think about everything so far? I know we’ve barely begun, but any comments? Suggestions? Critiques of my taste in music? Nagging suspicious? Speculations? Are you clawing at the walls with excitement or just kind of bleh?
A Note of Some Importance
I just want to reiterate on my end, since I’m the writer and I feel like it is my responsibility to do so, that Unspeakable is NOT quincest and does not contain any explicit quincest themes. I promise. I know from the first four pages it seems a little ambiguous, but by the end of Issue 1 it will be clear that the “unspeakable” part of Unspeakable is not related in any way to that. I understand the concerns - but I want to be absolutely clear:
There is no quincest in this comic.
There ARE strong themes such as violence, nightmares, gore, and death.
Some people might find this equal in gravity to quincest, in which case I apologize. No doubt there are those that would find it preferable. No doubt there are those that would find it worse.
IF I were to write anything related to quincest I would not post it on a public website like tumblr because that goes against my personal sensibilities.
So rest assured, there will be absolutely no quincest involved in this comic. It was, in fact, the third decision we made (right after “dark” and “nightmarish” and right before “grey-scale”).
Tegan and Sara’s interactions between each other will be, at most, platonic in nature as I feel is consistent with their public statements/actions irl.
tl;dr - you have nothing to worry about folks. You have my word.
Four Pages Posted!
So, since Mollie has been busy and sick and I’ve been sleeping forever and a half and just completely useless lately she decided we should post up the first four pages of chapter one for your viewing pleasure! So that’s about half of first chapter for you! Go give it a read on her page and let us know what you think!
